Miss Universe 2011: Miss Angola, Leila Lopes Gets the Crown

MissUniverse.com website wasn’t streaming tonight, and as far as I can tell, their website crashed. The only thing that keeps on going, relatively in real time, is Twitter. I am now following MissUniverse 2011, and as usual with live events, I am amazed by the comments supporting or condemning the performers. The world applauds Miss Philippines, Shamcey Supsup, for answering that the first person she loves is God. Never mind that love of God and World Peace are the cliche answers of the pageant – when beauty speaks, cliches no longer matter. And now, Shamcey Supsup is Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up, and her fans especially the Filipinos are going mad, yet proud – a dual feeling hard to express in words.
Then, there’s a matter of language: the world demands that the contestants speak English. As if, those who don’t, don’t deserve to be on that stage. But again, when beauty speaks, the language no longer matters. Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, would shine in any language.
Angola and Philippines were the most popular out of five finalists tonight on Twitter – the only livestream that matters for the PR professional who wants the real-time pulse of the events. But the judges of Miss Universe 2011 don’t have a live Twitter stream, and they don’t make their decisions based on the Twitter popularity of the contestant. And while Miss China, Luo Zilin, remains the fifth favorite, Ms. Brazil is Miss Universe 2011 2nd runner-up…
