Oprah Winfrey comment about Miss Universe 2011 and Shamcey Supsup

“‘I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.” - via NBC News

I think Miss Oprah Winfrey has a great point, and Shamcey Supsup deserve to be the Miss Universe than other contestant.

  3. I totally agree with you Oprah. I really thought she'll bring home the crown. She did not deserve to be the 3rd runner up. I am a filipino and I'm very proud of her.

  4. 1) Oprah never said this. You won't find any reputable international news site that quotes her on it, nor any clip on Youtube. If she had said it, it would be in the news.

    2) Whether or not her having an interpreter made a difference is something we'll never know. But it was a strategic decision on Shamcey's part. She was free to have an interpreter or not have one.

  6. >the other contestants should learn/study to speak english first as it is used as our universal language before participating MS U pageant so that they should not have interpreters to be fair w/ other contestants otherwise they will not participate w/ the competition.yes shamcey was free to have an interpreter since she has her own dialect but she prefer to speak english so that everydody will understand wherein ENGLISH was used in the miss U pageant as it is started.don't u get it?
    >not only for ms phillipines:to all aspiring contestants of ms U, learn/study english!{"/"}

  7. i Strongly agree with the point of miss Oprah in miss universe 2011....Either she stated that thoughts or not...The Deserving to be crown as Miss Universe 2011 is the Miss Philippines...With her straight answer to the Q without rethinking or post a seconds..unlike the the 4 of the magic 5 who has an interpreter so they could have a break ice to think of an answer...besides, How could a Miss Universe be a Representative if she can't speak & understand directly the International Language (English)...which is a very common language...hmnnn...think about that....

  8. The video showed during the top 10 where they were talking about their interests, all of them speak in english language even ms. China and ms. Angola especially Ms. Angola was an immigrant in Angola and came from UK, i thought they would still answer in english during the Q and A portion. That's why i was shocked that all of them has interpreter, only ms. Philippines answered the question in english. I think ms. Philippines deserves a higher rank than 3rd runner up.

  9. Even the whole world except Angola, agrees what had Miss Winfrey commented (true or not true) with regards to the result of the Miss U pageant is concerned, the decision of all judges is final. And there's nothing we can do about it now.. In our thoughts (which we all have one thing in mind), we know who really deserves to wear the Miss Universe crown. In my part, and the rest of the Filipino people, we're very thankful that our representative candidate stands out among the rest. . MABUHAY SHAMCEY SUPSUP!!! MABUHAY PHILIPPINES!!!.

    Thank you & God bless you Miss Oprah, because you are gifted & talented you could really discern the best among the miss universe contestant. Your choice for Miss Philippines was genuine. She was really a beauty, smart, well-poised & confident & her answer to her question "hit the nail right on the head".

  12. Well, it is very well said by everybody. I believed it is already high time for the Miss U organizer to primarily provide it in the qualifications that a contestant should know how to speak English.Consequently a crowned Miss U becomes an ambassador to the nations/countries around the globe, and how can she be effective at that if she doesn't know how to communicate using the universal language. Well, it is moot and academic guys, further you can't have the luxury of bringing an interpreter with you all the time. the Asians have work hard in learning the language, then why can't others do as well? I hope in the next pageant, it will no longer be about a question of the contestant having the choice of bringing and interpreter or not, but it should be acknowledged that we are looking for a Miss U who is with brains as well, meaning she can spontaneously and effectively communicate to her audience of various race and culture.

  17. While this is a heartwarming statement, this doesn't look like an Oprah quote. She wouldn't be this grammatically incorrect.

  18. The Miss U management should review their policy about finalists using interpreters during the Q&A portion coz' it's obviously a strategy being used for them to buy time to think about their answers. If I'm not mistaken, Ms. Angola can speak different languages and studied in UK so she's speaks English fluently. So why did she have to use an interpreter, right? I may be bias coz' I'm Filipino but I think Shamcey should have been given credit for being able to answer quickly plus the fact the she definitely made sense. But then it's the judges call so just have to be content with the results.
